Attention all students going off to college: Mom will not be there to feed you so you better learn some basic cooking skills! No kitchen in your dorm, no problem. Microwave ovens are the answer to heating everything from a quick breakfast to dinner. You will be amazed at what you can do in a small space with just a few essential kitchen tools and a little knowledge. You can even eat healthy.

You can also impress your friends by preparing food for them. Think of how popular you will be!

PART 1:

Basic introduction to kitchen skills, knives and appliances. Learn to get the most from your microwave oven and how to use it to cook Chicken, Fish and Vegetables as well as Baked Potatoes. What is this green stuff? Discover how to prepare a great salad without using bags and make a simple vinaigrette. Learn how to cut up and prepare healthy fresh vegetables.

Recipes will include: Noodle Salad with Peanut Dressing; Salad of Mixed Greens and Simple Vinaigrette; Chicken and Pasta in Alfredo Sauce, Coconut and Chocolate Chip Macaroons.

PART 2:

JoAnn will demonstrate basic cuts of meats and chicken and how to use them. She will talk about how to shop at a supermarket, make lists and keep to a budget. She will discuss how to plan a menu for entertaining friends.

Recipes will include: Grilled Pizza Appetizers; Oven “Fried” Chicken and Potatoes; Quick Turkey Sauté with Vegetables; Beef with Baby Bok Choy Stir Fry; Steamed Rice; Beyond Basic Burgers; and Grilled Pineapple Shortcakes with Caramel Sauce.
