The Rise of Rosé and Blush Wines
JoAnn Hecht and Phyllis VaccarelliThis is the fourth class in a series comparing wine varietals from countries around the world. Students have the opportunity to taste wines horizontally and then match them with foods that complement their flavors.
Rosés and Blush Wines are sometimes called "summer wines" and have often been considered "second class wines" by wine snobs. However, their popularity has been growing again and they are selling quite well in countries like France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Australia and Argentina as well as the U.S.
In California, Blush Wines such as White Zinfandel were all the rage in the 1970's. They are also making a comeback.
In class we will talk about the evolution of Rosés and Blush Wines which were once a delicate dry wine, became sweet in the 70's and now are emerging in a drier, but bigger style.
Here is the menu we will prepare.
